Caring for your Journey Forge USA knife

Thank you for choosing a handcrafted knife from Journey Forge USA. Your knife is built to provide years—even generations—of dependable service. Like any quality tool, a little routine care will keep it performing at its best.

Carbon Steel Care

Most Journey Forge USA are made from high-carbon steels such as 1084 or 80CrV2. These steels are know for their toughness, edge retention and ease of sharpening, but they require a little more careful than stainless steel.

After each use:

 • Wash with warm water and mild soap (if needed)

 • Dry the blade thoroughly before storing.

 • Apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil or another quality blade protectant if the knife will be stored for an extended period.

 • Store your knife in a dry location.

Over time, your blade may develop a natural gray or blue patina. This is normal and helps protect the steel from rust. Many owners appreciate the unique character it adds to the knife.

Leather Sheaths

Leather sheaths are designed for carrying your knife—not long-term storage.

Leather naturally absorbs and holds moisture, which can lead to rust if a knife is left inside for extended periods.

For long-term storage:

 • Remove the knife from the sheath.

 • Lightly oil the blade.

 • Store it in a dry place.

If your leather sheath becomes wet, allow it to air dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid direct heat, which can dry out or damage the leather.

Wooden Handles

Natural hardwood handles are durable and unique, but they benefit from occasional care.

If the handle begins to look dry, apply a small amount of mineral oil or a quality wood conditioner and wipe away any excess.
Avoid leaving the knife soaking in water or exposing it to prolonged moisture.

Sharpening

Your knife leaves the shop with a sharp working edge.

To maintain it:

 • Touch up the edge with a ceramic rod or fine sharpening stone before it becomes dull.

 • A few light touch-ups are easier and remove less steel than waiting until the edge is very dull.

 • Maintain the original bevel angle whenever possible for the best performance.

What to avoid

To help your knife last a lifetime, avoid:

 • Dishwashers
 • Prolonged soaking in water
 • Using the knife as a pry bar or screwdriver
 • Throwing the knife
 • Cutting on glass, stone, or metal surfaces
 • Storing the knife in a damp leather sheath
